Joint Meeting with APPG for UN Global Goals

The Minister for International Development, Rt Hon Baroness Chapman, met with members to discuss the government’s strategy and priorities for international development.

The Front Line of Food Resilience

The session’s guest speakers were  Chris Davies (CEO, Harvest London) and Dr Richard Byrne (Senior Lecturer and food security policy adviser). This session focused on the national security implications and resilience benefits of vertical farming and food supply chain innovation. Chris Davies outlined how vertical farming can reduce the UK’s dependence on fragile global food supply chains by enabling local, year-round production of leafy greens, herbs and soft fruits. He explained how proximity to urban centres not only reduces transport emissions but also increases food system resilience in the face of climate disruption, trade shocks, or geopolitical events. Dr Richard Byrne discussed the potential of vertical farming and supply chain innovation in supporting national climate and food security goals - using his agri-intelligence background to examine central and emerging issues for the UK. He explained how, with targeted investment and regulatory support, the UK can integrate these insights into effective security policy.
